Over the past three years, Mariupol has increased its development budget 37 times. This was possible for the sake of the eradication of corruption and the professional team that today operates in the city. The mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boychenko, said about this during the broadcast “Freedom of Speech” on the “ICTV” TV channel.
“Today Mariupol is in the top 10 cities of Ukraine and is a leader in transparency and openness for its citizens. In recent years, we have managed to attract foreign investors, despite the fact that Mariupol is a front-line city. The city has managed as of today to attract more than 110 million euros of investments. In my view, the professionalism of the team is expressed in this – to approach the matter with love, to make the hometown better. With this approach, it is possible to make the whole country better,” Vadym Boychenko said.
He also clarified that the decentralization, so strongly “advertised” by the previous power, in fact did not give significant advantages for the cities.
“For me, decentralization is not a slogan that some political forces use today. For me, this is an opportunity to change my hometown. However, decentralization, launched by the previous power in that form, did not work. All this is populism and not true! In 2015, 15% of personal income tax was taken from cities. For Mariupol, these are substantial amounts – about UAH 750 million. Over the past 4 years, the city budget has lost more than UAH 2 billion. And these are 20 houses or schools that could be built in the city for Mariupol residents, residents of Donetsk, Makeyevka, Enakievo, who joined our family,” the mayor of Mariupol said.
