Opposition leader, MP Oleksandr Vilkul commented on his Facebook page information in the media about the decision of the Constitutional Court, which allowed the renaming of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast to Sicheslavsk. “The current authorities are irresponsible. They can rename your city, for example, to Parubievsk. It’s just a thing they do with the residents of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast without asking their opinions.”
Vilkul stressed: “It is important. The decision of the Constitutional Court is not the last action. To rename, the coalition must make a change to the Constitution. The procedure is as follows: first, the coalition should, adopt a law on renaming on first reading, giving at least 226 votes. Theoretically, they can do this in April-July, if they submit it into the session hall.
Then, at the next session (September - October) in the second reading at least 300 MPs should vote for this lawlessness, since renaming a region is a change to the Constitution.”
The opposition leader noted that there is a nuance. “If the Verkhovna Rada votes for the renaming (in the first reading) until April 21, then Poroshenko will finally bid farewell to the hopes of the presidency. Since he will immediately lose several hundred thousand votes due to the actions of his MPs.
So, this process is postponed.
We will vote against and do everything within the law to prevent this from happening.
In addition, the OPPOSITION BLOC will demand the Verkhovna Rada to adopt the draft law that I have submitted, on the independent decision of people in local referendums on the names of settlements and streets. This is done throughout the civilized world.”
Vilkul stressed: “Globally, it’s necessary all reasonable people to unite in the parliamentary elections that will take place this fall.
We must send to the dump the current pro-government parties, which only make people beggars and split society with issues of language, faith and meaningless renaming.”
Recall that on February 8, 2019, Oleksandr Vilkul spoke out sharply against, and the OPPOSITION BLOC faction did not support the amendment of the Constitution by renaming Dnipropetrovsk Oblast to Sicheslavsk without conducting a local referendum.
