“The OPPOSITION BLOC faction strongly opposes amending the electoral law after the start of the electoral process,” Vadym Novynskyi, leader of the parliamentary opposition, emphasized.
According to him, the decision of President Zelensky on the appointment of early elections to the Verkhovna Rada is purely political, and the head of state will have to bear responsibility for it.
“The OPPOSITION BLOC faction supports the idea of holding elections to the Verkhovna Rada under a proportional system with open lists. We believe that this will lead to the structuring of society according to party preferences and will be a guarantee of responsibility of politicians to voters. But we strongly oppose amending the law after the start of the electoral process, and this coincides with the European traditions of the electoral process and the position of the Venice Commission. We promised voters in 2014 exactly open lists, rather than closed ones,” the leader of the faction emphasized.
Vadym Novynskyi insists on the need to adopt the Electoral Code in order to establish stable rules and stop rewriting electoral legislation before each election.
In addition, Vadym Novynskyi reminded President Zelensky of the need to implement the Minsk agreements. “The OPPOSITION BLOC has developed 11 draft laws that will allow integrating people and territories, restore the Donbas, and maintain a stable and long-lasting peace. We would like concrete steps to follow the presidential statements on peace and reintegration,” the leader of the opposition said.
According to Vadym Novynskyi, the first step of the newly elected President should be the immediate termination of the economic blockade of the Donbas, introduced in early 2017.
“Ukrainian enterprises of the Donbas should work under national legislation, pay taxes to the state budget, and Ukrainian citizens should receive salaries in hryvnias. But at the same time, social guarantees for citizens in temporarily uncontrolled territories should also be restored. Then the economic dialogue will become the basis for political dialogue,” the MP said.
Vadym Novynskyi called for an exchange of prisoners on the principle of “all for all” as soon as possible. “People want peace, justice from us and, finally, to get out of poverty,” Vadym Novynskyi concluded.
