Marshal Zhukov Avenue will appear in Kharkiv again. The decision to return the historic name to the Avenue, which in 2016 was named after Petro Hryhorenko, was taken today, June 19, at a session of the Kharkiv City Council. 59 deputies of the City Council voted for.
Earlier, an electronic petition on the official site of the Kharkiv City Council with a request to return the name to Marshal Zhukov Avenue was signed by 5 thousand 587 Kharkiv residents. After that, it was decided to submit this issue to the City Council session.
“We are returning the historical name of the Avenue and considering Marshal Zhukov exclusively as a military leader who liberated Ukraine, in particular Kharkiv, and Europe from the Nazi invaders,” Kharkiv Mayor Hennadii Kernes said during the session. “As for public opinion, it is reflected in the petition.” In addition to the signatures on the electronic petition, the city administration with the same request received personal appeals from city residents.
According to Yevhen Muraiev, a total of about 45 thousand citizens signed up with the corresponding statements.
“45,000 collected signatures in support of this issue is extremely important. Why? Because the policy that the power has carried out exponentially over the past five years was aimed at depriving our people of historical pride to rewrite history. Because weak people are easier to manage. Building external management, they needed us to stop being proud of our heroic ancestors. We will not allow this!” Yevhen Muraiev said.
Recall that in the Kharkiv City Council there was created a new deputy faction “Opposition bloc – Trust the Deeds”, which included 54 deputies. This was announced by the mayor of Kharkiv, Hennadii Kernes. The deputy of the City Council, Ihor Terekhov, has become the Chairman of the newly created fraction.
