The Kyiv District Administrative Court decided to recognize the actions of Speaker Andriy Parubiy as unlawful during the adoption of the draft law No. 5309 by Parliament on the forced renaming of churches. This was stated by the head of the OPPOSITION BLOC parliamentary faction Vadym Novynskyi.
“In the newest history of Ukraine, this is a significant event: for the first time, the court sided with the public and declared the actions of the authorities, who tried to fight the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, as unlawful. The district administrative court of the city of Kyiv decided to declare the actions of the Head of the Verkhovna Rada Parubiy as illegal, having satisfied the lawsuit of the MP from the OPPOSITION BLOC faction Oleksandr Dolzhenkov. This is about the adoption of the draft law “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations” by the Verkhovna Rada”, the head of the opposition faction said.
According to him, by this law, there was an attempt to forcibly rename the UOC in the Russian Church in Ukraine – not taking into account either the constitutional norms, the opinion of the parishioners, or the position of the Church itself.
“The authorities do not have the constitutional right to interfere in religious issues, and contrary to the requirements of the Regulations, the draft law was put to a second vote, wishing to achieve a pre-planned result. Thank God, the court showed true respect for the spirit and letter of the Law and satisfied the lawsuit of Oleksandr Dolzhenkov. Now the issue of the forced renaming of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by a court decision has been removed from the agenda. I want to believe it is the final decision,” Vadym Novynskyi concluded.
Recall that on January 18, he, as the trustee of 49 MPs, also appealed to the Constitutional Court with a view to recognize the law on the violent renaming of churches not consistent with the Constitution of Ukraine.
