Vadym Novynskyi: Three billion hryvnias of budget revenues do not compensate for the irreversible social consequences of the legalization of gambling

Legalization of gambling can cause a sharp increase in gambling addiction among young people and the collapse of the moral foundations of society. This was stated by People’s Deputy of Ukraine, Vadym Novynskyi, commenting on the initiative of the authorities to allow the presence of casinos, slot machines in the settlements of Ukraine in direct access to citizens.

According to the MP, lifting the ban on gambling will lead to an increase in the number of offenses and increase the risk of the state losing control over the situation.

“The three billion hryvnias of budget revenues declared by the Government Program from institutions involved in organizing and conducting gambling are definitely not a driver of economic growth. These are modest revenues, they do not compensate for the threat of extreme poverty for millions of Ukrainian families who will face gambling addiction,” Vadym Novynskyi said.

In his words, instead of legalization, today it is necessary to look for ways to fight illegal gambling.

“The government was obliged to solve the problem of illegal casinos and gaming halls, but total legalization is not the solution to the problem of stopping the laundering of funds obtained through illegal means through them. But no one will be able to return prosperity to the families of our fellow citizens with a game addiction, no one will compensate for their tears of grief and disappointment. Today, our split society needs a search for unifying factors, a return to traditional Orthodox values — family and moral,” Vadym Novynskyi emphasized.
