On November 20, 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and in 1989 the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Protecting the rights of the child is especially important and relevant for Ukraine. Ukrainians need to seek a construction of a state in which every child can get affordable medical care, the opportunity to go to school, feel safe and fully realize their potential. Honored Doctor of Ukraine, former MP, Tetiana Bakhteieva, wrote about this on het Facebook page.
She noted that the ongoing war in the Donbas threatened the health and lives of not only adults, but children.
“Since 2014, more than 250 children have died due to the war, but this is a conservative estimate, and the real numbers of child and adult deaths are higher,” the politician said.
In addition, hundreds of thousands of children are deprived of the right to a normal life because of the war, Tetiana Bakhteieva added.
“During the years of conflict in Ukraine, hundreds of schools were destroyed and damaged. More than 200 thousand students are forced to study during the hostilities. In many schools there is no heating, light, school buildings are partially destroyed. For children of the Donbas, unlike their peers, games, buying a computer, books, beautiful clothes and toys have become irrelevant. One question bothers them – if there are shots today? This is a big disaster and tragedy!” the former MP emphasized.
“In the 21st century, a humanitarian catastrophe is happening in the center of Europe before the eyes of the world community. The authorities must end this war! Ukraine will have no future unless the immediate cessation of the war in the Donbas and saving the lives of our children occur. Children need peace and adult protection!” Tetiana Bakhteieva stressed.
