Serhiy Mahera: The abolition of discriminatory language law is an important step towards peace in eastern Ukraine

People’s Deputy, Serhiy Mahera considers the registration of the draft law under No. 2577 of the authorship of the Mp from the “Servant of the People” faction as a real signal from the President of Ukraine about his desire to establish peace in the east of the country. He wrote about this on his Facebook page.

In his opinion, this draft law may already be the second step of the Verkhovna Rada, which clearly fits into the context of the last Normandy meeting of the four heads of state. The first, according to the People’s Deputy, was the already adopted law on the extension of the Law on Features of Local Self-Government in the Donetsk and Luhansk Regions for a year.

According to the politician, this draft law proposes to repeal the controversial Language Law adopted by the previous convocation of the Verkhovna Rada and instruct the Cabinet, based on wide discussion, to develop a new law.

“Given that the author is a MP of the ruling majority, we can hope that the draft law will be introduced into the session hall,” Serhiy Mahera expressed hope.

In his words, a similar draft law No. 1102, submitted back in August from MPs of the OPPOSITION BLOC, has been “under the cloth” and was not even discussed in the Committees.

“But, as for me, what matters is not authorship, but the decision to repeal the discriminatory language law, which divides our citizens more, and doesn’t staple our country,” Mahera concluded.
