Monument to Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov, demolished by activists, has been restored today, July 11, in Kharkiv. According to the mayor of Kharkiv, Hennadii Kernes, the bust was restored for the charity funds of the OPPOSITION BLOC party. The mayor also emphasized that if the monument was damaged again, it would be restored again.
“Every year, celebrating the Victory Day, we say that we honor and remember the dead, so we do everything to ensure that this memory is eternal. As for Marshal Georgy Zhukov, I can say that he specifically took part in the liberation of Ukraine, including Kharkiv. Therefore, if we live in a civilized society, then only the court must decide whether this bust should stand or not. If this monument is brazenly and unceremoniously demolished again, I promise it will be restored again,” Hennadii Kernes emphasized.
According to the mayor, the monument was restored under the current legislation. In particular, according to the Law of Ukraine “On Perpetuation of the Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945”, the duty of the state and citizens is respectful attitude to the memory of the victory over Nazism in the Second World War, on war veterans, participants of the Ukrainian liberation movement and victims Nazism.
At the same time, the mayor emphasized a huge contribution to the history of Kharkiv by Georgy Zhukov. In particular, the commander led the Kursk-Belgorod operation, as a result of which, on August 23, 1943, Kharkiv was liberated from the Nazi invaders. In addition, Marshal Zhukov directly participated in the Battle of Kursk, the Battle of the Dnieper and the Proskurov-Chernivtsi offensive, as a result of which Ukraine was liberated. It was Georgy Zhukov who was instructed to accept unconditional surrender of Germany on the night of May 8 to 9, 1945.
According to Yevhen Muraiev, the restoration of the monument to Marshal Zhukov is a response to attempts to bring to oblivion the feat of the people who liberated Ukraine from the Nazis.
“The restored monument to Zhukov in Kharkiv is right and fair. This is in line with the principles of democracy and, more importantly, the Constitution of Ukraine, which we respect as well as the history of our country. It is very difficult to say what our ideological opponents respect. Not Ukraine for sure. Kharkiv is one of the first cities in Ukraine, where the local authorities are doing everything to restore true values and historical truth. I am sure that all cities will gradually begin to show resistance. And we will definitely help them in this,” the MP said.
Recall, June 2, a group of activists during the party congress “Trust the Deeds” demolished a monument to Marshal Zhukov. After this incident, Hennadii Kernes announced his intention to restore the monument. Upon the demolition of the monument, the police opened two criminal proceedings.
