MP from the OPPOSITION BLOC Oleksandr Dolzhenkov on June 5 spoke from the rostrum of parliament with sharp criticism of the draft law No.10204 on secondary education adopted in the first reading, one of the key discriminatory provisions of which is the mandatory training of all schoolchildren in the Ukrainian language.
This draft law, according to the politician, does not meet the interests of the entire Ukrainian people. Moreover, it duplicates the discriminatory provisions of the law on the Ukrainian language as the state language and provides for the training of schoolchildren exclusively in the state Ukrainian language without regard to the interests of minorities.
“The OPPOSITION BLOC is ready to defend the interests of national minorities, including the Russian-speaking population. We are in favor of free development and protection of all languages, as required by the Constitution of Ukraine,” Oleksandr Dolzhenkov said.
He noted that the authorities are once again trying to ignore the legitimate interests of Russian-speaking citizens, who are more than 9 million people in Ukraine. Oleksandr Dolzhenkov insists that this provision contradicts not only the Constitution of Ukraine, but also the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
The oppositionist warned parliamentarians that if these discriminatory and unconstitutional provisions were adopted, the OPPOSITION BLOC would seek justice in the Constitutional Court.
“According to Article 11 of the Constitution of Ukraine, the state ensures the consolidation and development of the Ukrainian nation, its historical consciousness, culture and traditions, as well as the development of the ethnic, linguistic and religious identity of all indigenous peoples and national minorities in Ukraine,” Oleksandr Dolzhenkov reminded MPs.
